Did you know that Extra Fine Merino is actually a legal description of the diameter of the fibers used in yarns?  Here's a quick guide to some terms used to describe the quality of animal fibers.



Merino Wool Fibers:

Ultrafine Merino: less than 17.5 microns.
Superfine Merino: 17.6 - 18.5 microns.
Extra Fine Merino:  less than 19.5 microns.
Fine Medium Merino:  19.6 - 20.5 microns 
Medium Merino:  20.6-22.5 microns.
Strong Merino: 22.6 - 24 microns.




Alpaca Fibers:

Royal Baby (RB): less than 20 microns.
Baby Alpaca (BA): 20.1 - 23.0 microns.
Royal Baby (RB): less than 20 microns.
Superfine Alpaca (SF): 23.1 - 26.9 microns.
Medium Alpaca: 27.0 -30.9 microns.
Strong: 31.0 - 35.9 microns.
Coarse: 36.0 microns or above.




Mohair Fibers:

Superfine Kid: less than 23 microns.
Fine Kid: 23 - 27 microns.
Young Goat: 27 - 30 microns.
Adult Hair: 30 - 33 microns.
Strong Adult Hair: 33 microns or above.
